NEW ZEALAND VISA HOLDERS DURING COVID – 19
If you were in New Zealand on 2 April 2020 and are a holder of a Work, Student, Visitor, Limited or Interim Visa with an expiry date of 2 April to 9 July 2020 (inclusive), you visa will be automatically extended to 25 September 2020 . Immigration NZ will be emailing all visa holders under this category with the confirmation of the extensions. If you fall under this category and have not received your confirmation email, please use the Visa Verification Service on the New Zealand Immigration Website.
VISA HOLDERS WORKING IN ESSENTIAL SERVICES
Due to the Covid-19 Level 4 lockdown, New Zealand Government from 16 April 2020 has relaxed some visa conditions for both migrant workers and international students.
If you are a holder of an employer-specific work visa and currently employed in essential services, you may be able to vary your hours and or be redeployed to do other roles within your current workplace. The Government has also allowed visa holders to perform their current role in a different workplace to help essential businesses keep operating while New Zealand remains at Alert Level 3 or 4 and for 6 weeks after that.
Similarly, international students employed in an essential service role can know work longer hours (more than 20 hours) for their current employer while we remain at Alert 3 or 4 and for 6 weeks after that. However, if you are looking at working longer hours, you will still need to meet your study requirements. We suggest that you discuss your plans with your education provider.
In summary, if you work in essential services and fall under any of the following scenarios:
1.A work visa holder changing occupation however remains working for the same employer; or
2.A work visa holder changing employer but remains in the same occupation; or
3.A student visa holder working more than 20 hours and remains working for the same employer
you should request your Employer to complete and submit the form on the Immigration Website prior to you changing your current visa conditions:
